Sainsbury's Extending Hot-Hold Life of Food
Foodtech
Restaurant Tech
Overview#
Sainsbury’s, the UK’s second-biggest retailer, is running an open innovation challenge on the Leading Edge Only platform to extend the hot-hold life of food in flexi serve cabinets. Current 2-hour hot-hold restrictions drive food waste, reduce on-shelf availability during peak trading, and limit menu flexibility across its food-to-go offer. Sainsbury’s is looking for evidence-backed solutions that push hot-hold life beyond current limits while fully protecting food safety, quality, and customer trust. Applications close 19 September 2026.
Focus Areas#
- Packaging solutions that improve heat retention and moisture control
- Processing or cooking methods that support extended holding
- Cabinet technology or environmental controls such as humidity and airflow
- Microbiological or shelf-life validation approaches
- Guidance or tools that help store colleagues hold food consistently
Benefits#
- Collaboration with Sainsbury’s Product Development, Supply Chain, and Merchandising teams
- Potential to trial and scale a solution across a large UK retail estate
- Visibility of the innovation in a high-impact, customer-facing category
- Contribution to reducing food waste and improving sustainability outcomes
How to Apply#
- Submit a solution through the challenge page on the Leading Edge Only platform by 19 September 2026; proposals must stay compliant with food safety regulations, protect product quality, and be scalable across Sainsbury’s stores.
